About McAfee MOVE AntiVirus

McAfee Management for Optimized Virtual Environments (MOVE) AntiVirus delivers improved performance and resource utilization for virtualized environments. Designed specifically for these environments, MOVE AntiVirus employs and optimizes the virus-processing abilities of McAfee VirusScan, allowing you to obtain higher operational returns and decrease deployment risk.

VDI Challenges

Implementing VDI should not mean forgoing desktop security. Yet traditional antivirus solutions significantly impact the performance of virtual desktop environments, so much so that running a virtual desktop with anti-virus enabled, can half the number of virtual desktops that a server can host.

Traditional antivirus solutions run within each desktop, monitoring all desktop IO, and regularly requesting signature updates and scanning the local hard disk for viruses. This activity not only increases processor utilization of each virtual desktop, but also increases the IO load on the storage infrastructure; reducing the number of desktops per server, growing the network, storage and server infrastructure costs, and ultimately increasing the cost of desktop virtualization.

McAfee and Atlantis ILIO Joint Solution

McAfee MOVE-AV and Atlantis ILIO eliminate the performance, density and cost challenges of running AntiVirus in a VDI environment by optimizing the CPU, Memory and Disk IO access of the windows operating system and AntiVirus agents. McAfee MOVE-AV reduces the resource utilization from a CPU and Memory standpoint by optimizing and offloading anti-virus scanning to a dedicated MOVE virtual appliance. Atlantis ILIO deduplicates up to 90% of all file read requests from MOVE-AV and processes them locally on the same hypervisor without ever having to traverse the network of access storage. With McAfee MOVE-AV and Atlantis ILIO, organization can increase the density per server by up to 100% and reduce the amount of storage required for VDI by up to 90% with better performance than a physical PC.

Integrating Atlantis ILIO into a VDI Deployment with McAfee MOVE-AV

The McAfee MOVE-AV virtual appliance and the Atlantis ILIO virtual appliance are deployed “On Each Server” hosting virtual desktops. The virtual desktops and McAfee MOVE-AV are deployed using the Atlantis ILIO as an NFS or iSCSI datastore. When the Microsoft Windows operating system and McAfee MOVE AV reads or writes to its virtual hard drive, Atlantis ILIO processes the IO locally and deduplicates and duplicate file read and writes, includes those related to AntiVirus.

McAfee MOVE-AV and Atlantis ILIO scale out easily to add more desktop capacity by adding an Atlantis ILIO virtual appliance and McAfee MOVE-AV virtual appliance to each virtual desktop host without the need to add any additional storage.
