Customer Win: Wake Technical Community College Selects Atlantis HyperScale

HyperScale appliance powers education programs for 70,000 students with combined servers, all-flash storage and virtualization

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA – Feb. 10, 2016 – Wake Technical Community College, the largest community college in North Carolina, has selected Atlantis HyperScale to help run educational programs for more than 70,000 students. Atlantis HyperScale integrates servers, storage and virtualization into a single appliance that delivers significantly greater storage performance at 50–90 percent lower cost.

Wake Technical Community College provides services to students over five campuses, two training centers and multiple community sites. Before implementing Atlantis HyperScale, the school was supporting operations with more than 130 Lenovo servers running Blackboard education operations and databases for student records, accounting and general-purpose applications.

“Our server installation and data center was doing a great job of supporting our students and faculty,” said Dr. Ryan Schwiebert, vice president for information technology services and CIO at Wake Technical Community College. “But as the school continued to grow and students began placing higher demands for computing resources and storage, we needed something more powerful.”

School officials selected the all-flash HyperScale CX-12 Lenovo appliance to work with its installation of Lenovo servers. Atlantis partner Nirvana IT, which had been working with Wake Technical Community College, aided the setup and installation. The all-flash HyperScale CX-12 provides up to 12TBs of storage and supports up to 800 virtual desktop PCs. It works on a Lenovo server compute platform with two Intel E5-2680 v3 12-core processors; with the customer’s choice of VMware vSphere 5.5 or Citrix XenServer 6.5 hypervisors.

With Atlantis HyperScale, the school dramatically improved the performance of its education systems. Education accounts are now better connected, improving services to faculty and students.

“We are excited to put the Atlantis HyperScale appliances to work in our environment,” said Dr. Schwiebert. “Their cost-effective flash storage solution helps us offer more services with better performance than we would otherwise be able to implement. Our partnership with Atlantis enables us to improve the services we currently provide for our students, faculty and staff.”

“Wake Technical Community College is committed to helping students advance their education and careers with the latest technology and services,” said Bob Davis, Atlantis chief marketing officer. “Atlantis HyperScale all-flash hyper-converged appliances help Dr. Schwiebert and his team simplify the delivery of servers, storage, networking and virtualization in a single appliance at less cost and with greater performance.”
