Atlantis USX helps city IT professionals deliver multimedia content to BYOD users and meet demands for 20 percent VDI storage growth
Mountain View, Calif., Aug. 11, 2016 –Stadt Uster, a municipal authority in Uster, Switzerland is using Atlantis Computing software-defined storage (SDS) to support new bring-your-own-device (BYOD) and virtual workspace initiatives, while reducing storage costs by more than 50 percent and increasing capacity by 60 percent.
Stadt Uster provides municipal services to more than 30,000 Uster citizens. To help keep information and services moving, Stadt Uster’s IT team built a virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) with Atlantis USX that minimizes bandwidth costs and improves the multimedia application experience across 15 administrative and operational offices. Police officers can now use mobile technologies to help fight crime. Sanitation workers are using data captured by robots to maintain city sewers.
In the early stages of planning the new VDI, Harry Rauter, head of IT at Stadt Uster, turned to Atlantis Computing after it became clear that his old storage area network (SAN) solution couldn’t support their vision.
“Our existing SAN was already falling behind,” Rauter said. “Capacity in the SAN for our existing infrastructure was rapidly running out and the platform was beginning to struggle to deliver the application speed our users needed.”
Rauter worked with Comicro-Netsys, one of Switzerland’s leading IT services companies and an Atlantis partner, to design, deploy and support Stadt Uster’s VDI. Atlantis was selected for its ability to deliver the performance of an all-flash array for significantly less than the cost of a SAN. Virtual desktops with Atlantis USX are faster and more cost effective than physical PCs, providing a superior user experience in a smaller and more flexible setting.
“We saw Atlantis USX as a storage solution that required no rack space and was fast, free of problems and cheaper than any other flash solution that we knew,” said Rolf Meili, Comicro-Netsys account manager.
Greater Capacity and Performance, Less Cost, Room for Growth
Since the completion of its VDI with Atlantis USX, Stadt Uster has experienced significant gains in capacity, performance and cost savings. Atlantis USX deduplication and compression capabilities increased capacity for Stadt Uster’s existing SAN by 60 percent to support its virtual desktops. By eliminating the need for additional storage hardware, Stadt Uster reduced IT spending by 50 percent in the first year.
Atlantis enables Stadt Uster virtual desktops to perform faster than locally installed machines, and support new multimedia applications. Workers can now share videos captured by robots that crawl through drains to record the condition of their underground pipes. Atlantis USX and Stadt Uster’s VDI also supports a BYOD strategy, allowing police officers to use their tablets to view town and crime data while on the street.
Atlantis USX gives Stadt Uster the capacity to grow. The city’s IT consumes 173 GB of storage for its VDI, but now has another 638 GB available when needed.
“We are extremely happy with the reliability and stability of the Atlantis USX solution,” Rauter said. “Our VDI requirements are increasing by 10 to 20 percent per year, which we are now able to meet easily with Atlantis Computing.”
Atlantis Computing EMEA Vice President Chris Plant said, “We are proud to play a key role in the innovations and advancements that improve services to the Uster community. With Atlantis USX, Harry Rauter and his team are improving the city’s quality of life while saving money and building for the future.”
