Growing VDI from pilot to production and beyondThe transition from VDI pilot to enterprise wide adoption presents significant challenges with a traditional shared storage infrastructure. Conventional VDI solutions are not only expensive to grow, due to the high cost of storage, but can present both architectural and operational challenges if capacity and throughput requirements exceed that of the chosen storage platforms. With conventional storage environments, the greater the number of virtual desktops deployed, the less efficient the storage becomes. With Atlantis ILIO the opposite is true; the larger the environment, the more efficient storage infrastructure becomes; reducing the cost per desktop the more the VDI environment grows.
Scale VDI without Adding StorageGrowing a conventional VDI environment requires significant additional investment in storage. Conventional SAN/NAS storage arrays can only deliver the data throughput (measured in IOPS) needed to support VDI by increasing storage drives and controllers well beyond that needed to deliver to the required disk space. More virtual desktops require more storage; it is as simple as that.
With Atlantis ILIO, all duplicate data requests are served from files processed by the Atlantis ILIO software virtual appliance and are never seen by the storage infrastructure, eliminating the need to spend more on storage controllers and their associated disks. As more desktops are added to Atlantis ILIO, inline deduplication of data becomes more and more efficient, speeding up virtual desktops and decreasing the amount of storage capacity consumed per virtual desktop.
Atlantis ILIO inline deduplication eliminates redundant storage of desktop image components such as the operating system and common applications. The result is a decrease in the amount of disk storage capacity required for virtual desktops by as much as 95%. With Atlantis ILIO, a 1,000 user VDI deployment consuming 30GB of storage per desktop would see a reduction in physical storage requirements from 30TB to 1.5TB.
